Consumers across the country are starting to notice that they are paying a lot more for food and it isn’t just at the grocery store.
Grocery stores and restaurants are charging about three percent more than they were a year ago.
According to Statistics Canada, the biggest price jump over the past year was for vegetables at 7 percent.
Bakery products and meat are up about 5 percent and fresh fruits are costing 3.5 percent more.
The increase is being blamed on higher production and transportation costs and extreme weather in many of the food producing areas.

We are very fortunate in Canada… we DO have some options to paying the higher prices and I take advantage of it.
There are some produce markets that are less expensive (possibly a grade B rather than a grade A product) Bread can be found cheaper at McGavin’s Bread basket Byblos.. You just have to be creative sometimes.
I raised 2 children pretty much on my own… Times were really tough, even in the 90s and beyond. Where there is a will, there is a way.
I would however ponder that fruit veggies have gone up a whole lot more than 2.5-3%

@Bev- Actually, it is Coupon fraud that is costing consumers $$$, not the actual use of coupons, which are actually a win for consumers. They create brand awareness and competition between brands, not price mark ups

Actually food prices in Canada are generally higher than Europe. This is due mostly to European countries, much like the United States, subsidizing their agricultural industry. One of the only notable foods that are sold
